Locations in India

All locations where Father Quadras India vzw is active are in the Indian state Karnataka

The state of Karnataka is surrounded by other states along the coast of South India where trading posts were founded centuries ago keeping the economic prosperity on the coast and impacting only slightly the hinterland.

In contrast with Bangalore, the capital city of the state and the IT-city of India, the rest of the state is in majority agricultural area for rice and sunflowers.

Maski

Maski is the oldest mission post.
It was opened in 1993 by Father Santan Quadras to provide a decent education to the needy children of his parish. De school on the site, St. John’s Higher Primary School, accommodates students from Maski and other surrounding villages. The education is given in Kannada (Karnataka’s official language) to boys and girls

But since a good knowledge of English gives better possibilities for the future it gets an increased importance. Since the school only provides primary education (1st standard – 7th standard), elder children need to continue their education outside Maski. Currently about 80 children are attending school in more than 35 different institutions depending the studies offered and on their location. The boarding on the site is only for boys and the girls are accommodated at the adjacent convent.

Ballari

Ballari is the most important city in the neighbourhood and the place where the bishop of the Diocese of Ballari resides.

Located here are the central administration for all missions and parishes, the administration for all catholic schools in the diocese and the coordination for all foster parent projects.

Since 2011 the project also supports children in Ballari. It is no mission but rather a deprived part of the city. Currently about 50 children are supported. They attend various schools in the city.

Harapur

Harapur is a small settlement used as centre for a large number of surrounding villages.

De local population works mainly on the paddy fields that are irrigated with water from the huge Tunga Badra Dam.

The mission started in 2018 with its own school offering in a first step a kindergarten. The attendance was positive and this school year a first grade class was opened. Education is given in English because of its better future opportunities. Elder children go to schools outside the mission.

There are boarding facilities for the children. Not all children stay at the mission. Many live with their parents and commute daily, often by foot because of the very limited availability of public transportation.

Kamalapur

A first request for support was received from Kamalapur in October 2013. The children are originating from different places near the archeologic site of Hampi (part of the UNESCO world heritage list).

The parish was founded about 40 years ago. The people mainly came from Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh in the period that the Tunga Badra Dam was built. They are low skilled and economically deprived. The children were not going to school but were working to increase the financial means of their family. Meanwhile 14 children are being sponsored and go to school.
